The Dog Days of Summer...

...are winding down!

The chill of this morning’s air, a mere 33 degrees, fills my nostrils with a cool reflection of the days ahead. I am sitting on the front porch wrapped in my blanket (“Hydro” promises the robe is in the mail TODAY!) sipping my first cup of coffee and I see two deer heading towards the creek for their morning drink. They trod down the same dusty path that has been worn over the seasons,
they know their way.
* * *
I trampled the same paths every day for the past 3 months. I know my way.
But today, with the last of the tomatoes turned to sauce and the final Jalapeno’s thickened into jelly last evening, I can embark on a different route.
I’ve packed away the canners, the jars and the tongs; the kettles, the knives & the clean kitchen towels. What remains growing in the garden will garnish the chicken’s plates for a few weeks to come.
In a different time, in a different home, this time of year, the deer would come for their desserts of summer. I would watch them tenderly climb through my maze of tomatoes and vines, selecting only the finest at first. My garden beckoned them when I was through, and somehow they knew.
The deer here, in this place and time, seem to prefer the wheat stubble where the splattering of wheat kernels from the harvest now complete, will fatten them up for the long winter ahead.
I am grateful for this bounty that’s filled the freezers and lined my pantry shelves. We will reap the labors of my summer in the months to come.
When the killing frost arrives, I will pull the wilted remains tossing them on my newest compost pile. I then will do one last weeding, and fill my wheelbarrow over and over with compost from the 1st pile (I maintain 3, of different stages) dumping them into my raised rows, turning it into the soil lightly for winters rest period.
BUT… after this year? I may not plant another!
I say that every Fall!

I’m ready to enjoy the changing season.
With little time left before the cold Northerns begin to hover, I need to take the time to enjoy the warmth and colors of a lingering fall.

Today~ I will begin to breathe the sweet fragrance of the rose as it warms with the morning sun, and inhale the pungent Sage dripping in dew.

While Purple Verbena creep tenderly across the dampened soil,

a Yellow Rose will glisten under the
new blue morning.

Tea Roses will quietly open in a cool display,
as the “Flame Pot”warms with the breezy air.

My Crimson Roses will splash with color and profusely spread its perfume.
I love the mornings when they are living and vivacious!

The fresh cut grass lazily shakes its blades sending the bouquet of greetings to my senses, now renewed.

Even the spice of Marigold is welcomed this day as things awaken.

I am nauseous from the garden flavors,
their aromas drenching my walls.
So...
Today, I begin a new journey.
A new season awaits me.
I know there are more chores that await my attention, but for the moment, I plan to savor these mornings in their complete splendor.

Cowboy has been patient over the summer as he knows my passion for gardening, and he loves the rewards it brings, to his senses and his palette.
He does love to eat!
His labors are more intense without my help yet he never complains.
Secretly, as I stashed and stored my processing supplies for winter, I know he was grinning. Within a few days he can count on my shoulders to help him with summer’s neglected duties.

And I’ll be ready and eager for something “new”.
It will be a treat of sorts to get out in the barnyard, get a new kind of dirty!

Even back to the good old mucking!

I never claimed to be...

...the smartest duck in the lake!
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Today, I went on a rampage in the garden wielding a pair of scissors!
The grasshoppers were plentiful and I had a brainstorm!
Chase them down, catch those buggars & cut their heads off!
Cover them in chocolate…everybody loves chocolate, right?
(I didn’t think it would be too appetizing to leave heads on)
I thought if I packaged them real purty like, I could give boxes of Chocolate Covered Grasshoppers fresh from A Cowboy's Wife's garden ~
as great gifts to all my friends at Christmas!
Sounding pretty good, eh?

*****
HOW TO: If you want some before Christmas
**snicker, snicker...
Melt baker's chocolate in double boiler.
Fill molds halfway with chocolate, add grasshoppers,

fill rest of the way.
A tasty surprise in every one!

*****

Place your orders now if you want my surplus!

OK...let the chasing begin!
I put on my racing shoes,
(and mind you, I NEVER wear shoes, so this was meant to be hard core competition!)
donned my knee pads for the crashes I knew awaited me,
And headed for the gate!
Bucket and scissors in tow!

The Game is on fellars! Here comes the tough Cowboy's Wife!

"....ran through the briars and they ran through the brambles. And they ran through the bushes where a rabbit couldn't go...."

(Oh, those are Johnny Horton's words...

and besides...rabbits DO go where I am about to go!)

I made a wide sweep around the corn stubble, through the strawberry patch.
Danged!
These grasshoppers wanted to play a wild game of "Catch me if you can”!

Given that I had nothing better to do today, (if you believe that, I have ocean front property to sell you right here in the Palouse!) and with grandiose visions of the approaching “season of sugar plums” dancing in my head…or at best…Chocolate Covered Grasshoppers,
I advised them that I was up for a full eight innings…more if required!
After the ‘trip’, ooops, around the 3rd row of stubble, collecting my footing,
fist still curled...
I opened the fingers ..and.. lo and behold! Ten catches in one!

Hey, this is going to be fun!

So, I crouch low, sneak around the jungle of tomato bushes,
and dove into the compost pile!

Howdy Doody! Now I have 28 in the bucket!

I’m not tuckered yet nor am I suffering any pain, so let’s keep playing!

Tromping through the bean patch (because I am soooo done with them!)
I managed to tackle 33 more of these feisty varmints.
The bucket is yet to be heavy in numbers, so let’s continue!

Once more around the strawberries, through the carrots that refused to produce

(I just know where I planted them) ...up to the zucchini!
May as well trash through them I figured,
even the chickens are tired of ‘em!

Onward and upward!

Stumbling through the mighty Dill, scattering seeds to wind…....
oh well, next year my whole garden will grow already pickled!

Tiptoeing through the cantaloupe.....
(no I wasn’t thinking of Tiny Tim’s Tulips...but since you mentioned it...)

Tiptoe to the window, by the window that is where I'll be......
Come tiptoe through the tulips with me!
Tiptoe from your pillow, to the shadow of a willow tree.....
And tiptoe through the tulips with me!
Knee deep in flowers will stray,
we'll keep the showers away.
And if I kiss you in the garden,
in the moonlight, will you pardon me?
Come tiptoe through the tulips with me!

....and leaping over the peppers I finally decide to call it quits, there are more than enough for dipping in chocolate...for the trip to Grandmother's house!
Oh...I am the Grandmother...come on over and get your
Chocolate Covered Grasshoppers!

Over the river and through the woods
To Grandmother's house we go.The horse knows the way to carry the sleigh, Through white and drifted snow.
Over the river and through the woods,Oh, how the wind does blow.It stings the toes and bites the nose. As over the ground we go.
Over the river and through the woods, To have a full day of play.
Oh, hear the bells ringing ting-a-ling-ling,For it is Christmas Day.
Over the river and through the woods,Trot fast my dapple gray;
Spring o'er the ground just like a hound,For this is Christmas Day.
Over the river and through the woods, And straight through the barnyard gate.
It seems that we go so dreadfully slow;It is so hard to wait.
Over the river and through the woods, Now Grandma's cap I spy.
Hurrah for fun; the pudding's done;Hurrah for the pumpkin pie.

Oops, I almost forgot, there are those gorgeous red beets over yonder!
I'll bet there are more than 100 of these 'dying to be' Chocolate critters in there...

OK...One more round guys!
Here I come!

The Cheering crowd of pumpkins was driving me on!

Even the competition was slithering out of my way!

I'm running towards the finish line!

Beets! Here I come, yield into my bucket, those grand grasshoppers!

!
!
!
!

OUCH!!!!

!
!
!
!

Game is over....

I lose!

No Chocolate Covered Grasshoppers for the giving at Christmas!

Garden is trashed!

And I don't care..

Beets are the end of my gardening career for this year of 2008...

Yep.....

You know those danged scissors I was wielding around?

GOT ME!!!!

Snipping the leaves off the beets!

Cut right through the band-aid & into my two day old Pinkie wound that has yet to quit throbbing when abused & made it bigger yet!!

Anyone got a knife? Oh...I forgot, I do

...someone want the job of chopping the durned thing off so it's out of my way??? I won't even charge you!

Wonder what it is....about me, my Pinkie, and RED food???

....how's that TW?

I got lost...

...this past week, in a time warp!

Before I knew what blew over me,
it's become Monday....again!
Do you ever have those days, weeks, or months,
where your plans and intentions
are bigger than reality?
My "list" of things needing done was overwhelming.
As it turns out, I hurried aimlessly, accomplishing nothing! Each item seemed a huge project of its own, an unwanted burden.
* * * * *
The more I thought about the "list"...scurrying about to achieve something, the less I did! I actually created more things to do by being so haphazard.

I will blame it on our Sons visit....Thursday.
I cleaned and baked and prepared his favorite foods.
Enthusiasm and anticipation was my driving force Monday through Wednesday.

And then he was gone...Friday.

I will blame my inabilities Saturday & Sunday to my sadness.
A selfish unknown as to when our next visit will be.

Here it is Monday again, our Son emailed this morning,
he'll be pulling into Fargo about the time I get this written.
He is full of excitement and nervousness about the huge new project in his life.

I just checked and my "list" is still intact!
No fairy came along in the night to scratch things off of it.

So with drudgery and diligence, I must tackle one thing at a time!
I must realize some productivity this week!
* * * * *
...AND, I must go 'visiting'! I don't know what's going on around the world!
I hope I haven't missed out on too much.
(if I have the energy after my battle with the List!)

Git'er Done!

...when the pickings 'er ripe!

Today....

One batch of pickled beans...
....and more to get done!

(gotta get these done....& more Salsa... as a short week from now, Son will be heading East to Fargo! We will be swapping out jars... he brings the empties & I replenish with a fresh supply!) ...(and yes..many tears from ol' Mom will be smothered with humongous hugs from him...)
Hmmmm...wondering how he intends to get my empties back to me?

First Salsa of the year!

Tomatoes are really strutting their stuff....
for the grasshoppers & bunnies!
Just hope they leave enough for me....can't let the Son have ALL our Salsa!

Carrots, Beets, Tomatoes...

(Despite the "Invasion of the Bugs"...some are actually making it to the pantry shelves!)

And more beans.....

They are just starting to come on strong! Hopefully, we won't get an early frost before I have all we need put up! Two years ago that happened, & I was NOT a happy camper!

So.............this is my story & I'm sticking to it!
