And we need our "Pinkie" why?

...Here's a few reasons
(however, My reason is the last one...)

After much "studying and research", these are some of the main reasons people claim a "Pinkie" is important.

*Mathematically, things would be different (couldn't count to five on one hand...)
*It's considered proper etiquette for drinking tea in a tiny cup
(yep, it works for me...)
*From a distance, a football referee signaling 4th down uses the four digits. Minus the pinkie from far away, a referee using the thumb, index, middle and ring finger could be construed as indicating three and a half down.
(I know nothing about football...)
*To type the letters Q & A & Z (never stopped to check...)
*Needed for playing guitar & piano (wouldn't know, can't do either...)
*Good to pick your nose with (hmmm...who thought of that one?)
*Many people's pinky can't bend by itself. It is reliant on the ring finger.
If your pinky bends so does your ring finger & visa versa.
(There are always exceptions, my right one is reliant on ring finger, my left not...maybe because I'm left handed?)
*Oh, and then there are "pinky promises"

Country Traditions :
* Japan~ holding up a pinkie while speaking of two people signifies that they are in a relationship.
*China~if one holds up a little finger at another, it is usually considered vulgar, just as holding up a middle finger in the United States and other countries is generally regarded as offensive.
*India~holding up the little finger is also a signal of "katti" or a broken friendship, a sign that someone is angry, or a playful suggestion that the person flashing the pinky is not going to speak to you.
*India~holding up the pinky is a signal that the person has to urinate.
*Similarly, Indonesia~when a man points his pinky finger downward it is a signal that he needs to urinate.
*Turkey~ it's tradition to link pinky fingers when two people are making a bet.
*In Judaism~it is customary to extend one's arm and pinky finger to the Torah as it is lifted following its reading in the Synagogue.
*The Iron Ring is a symbolic ring worn by some Canadian engineers. The Ring is a symbol of both pride and humility for the engineering profession, and is always worn on the little finger of the dominant hand. (A similar ritual is performed in the United States called the Order of the Engineer).
*The Balkans~a solitary long fingernail on the pinky finger of a man signifies that he is single.
*The Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority holds their pinky finger in the air as a (Greek) greeting to their fellow sisters.
*Russia~when two people are French-kissing, it is customary to often link pinky fingers together.

The Final answer??
MY reason for having a Pinkie?…

* It will always be there for you when you're cutting food with a knife.. like while making more Salsa! ("or making dinner..like in June")
UNTIL... you manage to slice it off!!

Yesterday, I managed to pick, cut from the cob & put up 8 gallons of corn...
without a hitch!
Today? Because I picked 40# of tomatoes, I thought I should make more Salsa and tomato sauce? Voila! That's my kind of luck!
(Speaking of Salsa...check out these green peppers coming out of my garden! They are huge! See the one in the pint jar? They average 8-10" long! Never seen the likes of before!
Those are Jalapeno's in the bowl. Now I need to get out the dehydrator as I have bushels of green peppers & Jalapenos left for the picking! The Son wants me to try Jalapeno jelly..for crackers...hmmmm...have not done that yet, so will have to do some research)

Anyhow, same finger as in June! This time though, I managed to cut the "healed" part that was numb from severing the nerves back then, plus alot more! Pretty sure I'll be "hideless" soon, it didn't want to reattached this go round!
While I am left handed, I was kinda hoping I could keep this "Pinkie" around awhile! I do sorta like to use it for "balancing" when I do my etchings...
and for steadying my soldering iron for my stained glass!
This summer's hazards are having other ideas......

I have a stinking hunch, it is gonna be more painful when the hide comes off,
than it was when I whacked it today!
(Well..dunno about that for sure... I did get an instant belly ache when it happended . It shouldn't have hurt! I was using my Henckels knives that Son gave me a few years back and I've kept my word to him about caring for them...
so much so, they rarely need sharpening, they are like razors!)

SO......
I had to go down to the barn and rummage through Cowboys first aid stuff. You know, those good Equine meds.! I grabbed the Cut Heal, some gauze and tape & vet wrap. Found my Cowboy to give me a hand. He took one look at my blood soaked towel wrap, and says "NOW what'd ya do??"

(Like I do something everyday...duh! Look who's talking! It's more like HE does something everyday! He's been dumped on his head twice, yes twice in 3 days! )

He proceeded to unwrap the towel and 'dress' my wound. But he did say I'd have been better off if it had cut plum through!
Get all the 'hurt' out of the way -right away!
I thanked him nicely and turned to come back to the house to finish my canning. He snickered, "You are welcome, but where were you when I got dumped on my head back in those hills earlier? And you didn't see the riderless horse galloping over that crest heading for who knows where??"

I just kept walking, chuckling to myself....
"so ya wanna be a Cowboy, eh?"
(he should be hanging his hat out to dry! Finding a new way of living!
....I was thinking...)
And No, I didn't or couldn't have known he got dumped again! Now if the had horse come back home, I'd have noticed that it was riderless and the saddle was
caddy-wampus & blankets were cockeyed...then...I would have had to try to figure out the "where" in this vast space to look!

All in all...I got a lot accomplished today. The last of the 36 pints of Salsa are in the canner now & the 2 pots with tomato sauce~to be~are simmering away...for the rest of the night until about noon tomorrow! The chopping off the upper part of my Pinkie I just chalked up to being another incident in my days, that helps to remind me that I truly should learn the word "CAREFUL" ....

But...

I'm pretty tough you know, just ask my Grandkids!
They call me a "Tough Ol' Bird" !!

Ouch! Hope that finger isn't throbbing too hard today WOW. Looks like an awful cut from the photos.

I too am sporting bandages to warn of the dangers of cooking! I managed to break my baby toe last week by dropping a stoneware plate on it! It's just not a good time of year for those "little" digits by the sounds of it.

Hope you don't lose any of that wonderous pinkie!

Isn't that what pinkies are for? Stopping knives so that they don't get dull by hitting on the counter?

My index fingers tend to take the brunt of my days...

So I am giggling at all of the 'pinkie' info...and then saw the pictures...oh good lord! Hope it's healing :)

Jeannelle said...

Oh, my.....sorry to hear of your pinkie injury. Hope it heals quickly!

You're very ambitious will all your canning! The peppers look fabulous!

The "pinky" info was very interesting, too!

Sarah said...

holy crap girl! Did you get any pinkie in the salsa? Ha ha! What a surprise that would be..hee hee! If your husband has any "Wonder Dust" in his equine first aid kit, it might help heal it quicker.

Hi Barb :)

I'm so sorry you cut yourself! Ouch!! I am not allowed to have sharp knives in my house because I will cut myself everytime. I'm a serious knife clutz LOL

OUCH, OUCH, OUCH.........that must hurt like heck!!! I always manage to slice the heck out of my index finger on my right hand, so I know how you feel. Hope the boo-boo heals quickly.

Must be the year for peppers......I had a good crop as well along with a fairly decent crop of tomatoes and we have eaten salsa until it is coming out of our ears.

I have a box of beets to do something with now that I don't have to wash chickens and haul them to the fair......time to get back to life on the farm.

Beautiful Days to you....=)

So sorry you hurt yourself. Hope it is feeling a little less painful. And I'm with you about going to the doctor. Not if I can help it!

That looks like a bad cut; if you can find some lavender essential oil to put on it (not the synthetic crap, but the real stuff) laveeder regenerates tissue quickly. It's also good for burns, headaches, and a good nights sleep! I never leave home without it.
